Sustainable Northwest Wood is proud to partner with small mills to mill and dry tanoak, a special hardwood species native to Southern Oregon and Northern California.
Tanoak is also known as California Chestnut. While it has characteristics similar to both oak and chestnut, it is not truly from either of these families; instead, it is a unique evergreen hardwood that is part of the beech family. It grows in the Siskiyou and Coast Ranges of Southern Oregon and Northern California.
Our tanoak lumber is made from logs that are salvaged from chip yards, where the wood is otherwise turned into pulp. It is sourced through our network of small mills in Southern Oregon.
Tanoak is character rich, with grain variations and tight knots, paired with warm honey and chocolate tones. It is very hard, earning a 1420 rating on the Janka scale, making it appropriate for flooring, stair treads, butcherblock material and furniture.
